it appears that i require some sort of straightjacket to keep me from sitting here all day doing nothing but posting in the firefox 0.8 thread at the something awful forums. i think i enjoy helping people with this browser just a little too much. oh hey, i had a list, didn't i?

i think i'm doing pretty well for only being a week into the month. i'd have crossed off the hardware one, but i still have a dvdrom drive here that no one seems to want [even for the bargain-basement price of $15] [edit: not anymore, thanks k'vn!], and there's some junked hardware sitting in the corner which i just don't know how to get rid of.

as for the mp3 player, i picked up my rio karma on the first, and have loved every minute of it's use so far. here, have some pictures. it was a tad on the expensive side, but it's hands-down the best audio-playback-device i have ever purchased in my life. it's a wonderful wonderful little product, and i endorse it completely. but yeah, enough about that. but yeah. i need to get moving. having domains propagate almost immediately is pretty cool. infinitely better than back in the Dark Ages, when it'd take days for a domain to propagate. plus the whole waiting-for-a-human-to-approve-the-domain deal. that sucked too. registration took about 2 minutes to be processed. then a bit longer for it to propagate. and now here we are 3 hours later and i've already got a teaser splash page up. hooray for progress. i love these psa's being put out by the telecommunications industry right now. they're all along the lines of "HOLY SHIT LAWS LAG BEHIND TECHNOLOGY!", and then request that you urge lawmakers to speed things up. one features a guy showing off how cool and cutting-edge he is by using a circa-1990-cellphone.

but that isn't the best one. the best one goes:

[SCENE: A COUPLE IS SITTING ON A COUCH IN A SUPPOSED PUBLIC AREA. THEY ARE ATTEMPTING TO SUCK EACHOTHER'S FACES OFF. THEY APPEAR TO BE SUCCEEDING]
VOICEOVER: When our telecommuncations laws were made, "PDA" just meant "Public Display of Affection". Times change, so should laws!
[ZOOM OUT TO GUY USING A PDA]

the part that really makes it good is the guy using a pda. he looks like an average loser geek, and there's this bit where there's no voiceover. i guess it's time for people watching to sit there for a moment and go "OHHHH. HE'S USING A PDA! IT'S ONE ACRONYM THAT MEANS TWO DIFFERENT THINGS! I GET IT!" it gets better though, because while there's this dead air, he looks at his pda, he looks over his shoulder at the people who should get a room, and looks incredibly sad.

it's ok mr pda guy, at least our electronics love us. [02.11.04@15:49]

what happened to 16, you ask? well, 16 Didn't Work. it was 90% coded, went through several different revisions, and was probably my most ambitious design to date. but it didn't work. sure, layout-wise it all worked out perfectly. but it was completely non-functional once you started putting content in. so we skipped it and have gone straight to 17. i like 17, it has naota. and weirdly-spaced verdana so it doesn't look like verdana anymore. it is a good design. and it . . well it *was* valid xhtml, but i apparently need to go fix that now. bah.

edit: and now it seems to work. except for one little error, which i don't understand. damn you, little error. hopefully josh will enlighten me about it Soon. bah. [02.11.04@23:23]

took a bit of extra hacking, but now the site is valid xhtml/css. with this done, i've completed site one of three for february. the second is still in a magic void of being practically-done, like it has been since earlier in the year. but the wrapping-up of that isn't my job, it needs to be reviewed by a client. february is moving along ridiculously fast and smoothly. now if only i could find some empty time to play videogames. goal for tonight: start updating edit thingie with the goal of 2.1. things to include? month and year output in some form i can then include on the page. so it doesn't just say "archive" it says where in the archive you are. if i feel dangerous i might even implement the "article" view, but i think i might just ignore that and just leave it for if i ever want a permalink. personally, i don't. i couldn't care less about permalinking. i don't feel i've written anything here over time that i feel i need to send to people. except the black widow spider incident, cause i did actually send that out to people, but that's besides the point. it'll be a feature i leave in, but not one i go into deep efforts to say "OMG THIS IS MY PERMALINK PLZ CHECK IT OUT AND BE MY E-FRIEND".

but anyways, first i need to finish my coursework due in 24 hrs. then i can start coding. mmm. coding. [02.13.04@22:36]

that went ridiculously fast. i really didn't expect it to be so easy. and i got another great generalized reusable function, formatym. it takes a "yearmonth", in the format of YYYYMM, and spits out whatever i damn well please. it's not a huge function, but it's useful. and it's exactly what i needed. and now it's written, so i can go vegetate for the rest of the weekend. huzzah.
